Our food is required to contain substances which are necessary
for our body. These substances are called nutrients.
These nutrients help us in giving energy to work, play, grow our
body and fight diseases. The different types of nutrients
required by our body are carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, proteins
and minerals.

Foods rich in carbohydrates are responsible for giving us
energy. Therefore, such foods are called energy-giving foods.
For example, chapattis, poha, bread, etc. are rich in
carbohydrates.

Just like carbohydrates, fats are also energy-giving foods. Fats
get stored in the body due to which they can be used later. That
is why fats are also known as the energy bank of the body.
For example, ghee, butter, oil, etc. are rich in fats.

Proteins are responsible for providing growth to our body.
Therefore, foods rich in proteins are called body-building
foods. Proteins are also required to repair damaged parts of our
body.
For example, milk, curd, eggs, etc.

Vitamins and minerals protect our body from diseases and keep us
healthy. That is why, vitamins and minerals are called
protective foods. Our body requires small amounts of vitamins
and minerals to stay healthy.
For example, fruits, green leafy vegetables, sprouts, etc. are
good sources of vitamins and minerals.
