WORD PROBLEMS
Example 9: To reach an island, Jas travelled 9.52 km by a ship and 3 km 768 m by a boat. What is the total distance travelled by Jas?
Distance travelled by ship = 9.52 km
Distance travelled by boat = 3 km 768 m = 3.768 km
Total distance travelled = 9.52 km + 3.768 km = 13.288 km
So, Jas travelled a total distance of 13.288 km or 13 km 288 m.
Example 10: Amrita went for a picnic. The journey was 43 km long. After 27 km 750 m, the bus stopped for a short break. How much distance was still left?
Total distance of journey = 43 km
Distance covered = 27 km 750 m = 27.750 km
Distance left = 43 km – 27.750 km = 15.250 km
The distance left was 15.250 km or 15 km 250 m.
Example 11: A fruitseller is selling oranges, mangoes and apples. The oranges, mangoes and apples together weigh 36 kg 357 g. If the weight of the apples is 18 kg 387 g and the weight of the oranges is 14 kg 270 g, what is the weight of the mangoes? Find in kilograms.
